EarthCorps is currently inviting international groups and non-US citizens to join the 6-month international program for environmental restoration. EarthCorps is a non-profit organization dedicated towards making a global community through local environmental service. EarthCorps offers intensive programs for young people to teach them the best practices in conservation techniques and develop skills in enthusiastic volunteers.

The international corps member position is a 6-month service learning experience with EarthCorps in Seattle, WA, USA. Young environmental leaders from countries outside the United States will join US AmeriCorps members to develop skills in environmental service, community building and leadership.

Corps members spend 80% of their time in the field engaged in environmental restoration projects throughout the Puget Sound region of Washington State. Restoration is very physically demanding and takes place outdoors in all weather conditions.

Program Description

EarthCorps brings together emerging environmental leaders from around the world to participate in an environmental service program. EarthCorps programs focus on physical hands-on field service that includes:
  • Environmental restoration
  • Community building
  • Leadership
(40 hours a week, 7:30 am to 5:00 pm) Participants take part in environmental restoration projects, such as invasive plant removal, tree-planting, trail construction, and erosion control. Projects are located throughout Washington State.

Fiekd Service (80% of program)

Corps members work outdoors on a crew of 6-7 young adults performing environmental restoration. A crew leader guides the crew as they work on restoration projects throughout the Puget Sound region. These projects are the central component of the EarthCorps program. Corps members are responsible for completing projects efficiently using the best practices of EarthCorps and partners.

FIELD SERVICE PROJECTS (and their typical percentage of the program):
  • Invasive plant removal (manual) 35%
  • Invasive plant control (herbicide) 10%
  • Native plant installation(planting) 15%
  • Restoration site maintenance 15%
  • Trail construction/maintenance 15%
  • Volunteer management 8%
  • Erosion control 2%
Multiple camping trips (typically from June-September)

Restoration is physically demanding service that takes place outdoors in all weather conditions. Each year new members consistently underestimate the physical and mental requirements. Service regularly involves:
  • Long days of repetitively shoveling, digging, and swinging heavy tools,
  • Heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. and bending,
  • Working, eating, and living in the outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Walking on steep or uneven terrain up to 13 km while carrying 18 kg of weight
  • Working in extremes of heat or cold
Please consider the nature of the work prior to applying and let us know if you have any specific questions or concerns.

TRAINING (20% of program)

Corps members spend all additional time in community building activities and training. This training consists of three elements:
  • Orientation: International participants receive a 7 day orientation that introduces them to life and work in the United States and at EarthCorps.
  • Retreats: EarthCorps runs three retreats, one at the beginning, middle and end of the program. These are a chance for the entire corps (both international and US participants) to spend time together, form crews, reflect on work accomplished and celebrate achievements.
  • Workshops: These sessions provide skills and context for the restoration work that corps members complete. Topics covered include basic botany and ecology of the Pacific Northwest, environmental restoration theories and concepts, topics in natural resource management and global environmental issues, leadership skills, and interpersonal and cross-cultural communication.
