The Fulbright Program in Ukraine is pleased to invite you to attend a presentation “Using Rubrics as a Tool to Improve Teaching and Learning” by U.S. Fulbright Specialist 2014 -2015 Allan Shwedel, Ph.D., to be held on Thursday, February 26, 2015, 6:00 p.m., at the Fulbright Office (20 Esplanadna Street, Suite 904, M “Palats Sportu”, Kyiv).
Allan Shwedel will discuss what rubrics are and advantages to using them, will demonstrate how to develop rubrics and how to use rubrics and video for self- and collaborative reflection .
“A rubric is a scoring tool that lists the criteria for a piece of work, or “what counts” (for example, purpose, organization, details, voice, and mechanics are often what count in a piece of writing); it also articulates gradations of quality for each criterion, from excellent to poor.” (From: Understanding Rubrics by Heidi Goodrich Andrade)
Rubrics appeal to teachers and students for many reasons:
- they are powerful tools for both teaching and assessment
- they help students become more thoughtful judges of the quality of their own and others’ work
- they reduce the amount of time teachers spend evaluating student work
- they are easy to use and to explain.
Allan Shwedel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Secondary and Higher Education at School of Education Salem State University (Salem, MA). He received his B.A. degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI) in 1971 and his Ph.D. in Education from Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) in 1979. He worked in the Boston Public Schools’ Office of Research, Assessment and Evaluation for 15 years before coming to Salem State in 2001. With three other faculty members from Salem, he has been taking students to do fieldwork in Liberia for the past four years. Currently he has a Fulbright Specialist grant to work on assessment with faculty and students at Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University in Mykolayiv.
The presentation will be conducted in English.
